Writing a response after talking about the readings in class is an interesting experience. After reading and listening to what everyone had to say about this piece, I think the loudest voice in is is the egotistical Malinowitz. After thinking about it for a while, I noticed that the story never deviated from her experience, there was not much reflection, and even when she was talking about other people, the story always revolved around her. This isn’t to say that this is a bad thing, but it was done in such a way where there wasn’t really an opportunity for me to connect with her on a deeper level. I felt like she just wanted to get her story out, and get her voice to be heard without really thinking about what that voice was saying or what was worth listening to.
It’s all over the story, when she’s talking about how she wrote such meaningful things behind people’s pictures, or how Adrienne Rich thought she was so intelligent, or how she wanted to be famous. The story really didn’t linger on the why’s and how’s.
I think the line I liked most, or saw her as most vulnerable was when she was admitting that talking to Kerryn on the phone had been a disappointment and she said:
“If I could just crawl back onto email and pour it all out to her, it would surely be a good thing.”
While this line is still just about her, she is showing a vulnerability here that allows her to admit that she was not perfect, that not everything was perfect.
